Kyocera meets new Energy Star standard

Sustainable product design delivers cost and environmental benefits Reading, UK, 11th April, 2007 – Kyocera has confirmed that all of its printers and multifunctional products (MFPs) produced after 1 April 2007 exceed the requirements of the new 1.0 ENERGY STAR specification for imaging equipment introduced by the US Government and the European Union. ENERGY STAR helps users of office and home technology to protect the environment and save money by designating energy efficient products.
The new ENERGY STAR rating for imaging equipment has stricter requirements than its predecessor, particularly with regards to paper consumption. Specifically, duplex functionality as standard becomes mandatory for colour and monochrome devices with speeds of 40 ppm and 45ppm or more in colour and monochrome respectively. Duplex functionality is required as an optional feature on all printers and MFPs within the 20-39 pages per minute (ppm) segment for colour devices and the 25-44 ppm segment for monochrome devices. All of Kyocera’s monochrome printers with a print speed of 22 ppm or above, such as the FS-1030D, already feature duplex printing as standard. The company’s A4 colour printers, for example the FS-C5015N, offer duplex printing as an optional feature. Kyocera’s A3 MFPs are all duplex capable: devices such as the KM-2050 offer it as an optional feature, but all workgroup MFPs with a speed of 30 ppm and upwards, for example the KM-3050, KM-4050 and KM-5050 have duplex printing as standard.
All current Kyocera products produced before 1 April 2007 meet the previous ENERGY STAR requirements for printers or MFPs. “Fulfilling the ENERGY STAR requirements demonstrates the contribution Kyocera’s devices make to environmentally-responsible printing by reducing power and paper consumption in offices and home offices,” says Tracey Rawling Church, Head of Marketing at Kyocera UK. “Kyocera devices go beyond basic adherence to standards however, as they benefit from sustainable design thanks to ECOSYS technology, which dramatically reduces waste associated with toner cartridges by designing it out altogether.”
As well as paper usage, ENERGY STAR regulations also limit the power consumption of equipment. ENERGY STAR compliant printers can cut electricity use by over 60 per cent and an ENERGY STAR compliant MFP can save about £107 in electricity bills over its lifetime in comparison to non-compliant devices. The power consumption requirements of the ENERGY STAR standard encompass both the total power consumption of the device and the stand-by power consumption when the devices are in ‘ready’ or ‘sleep’ mode.
